The pipes would not sound the same without the addition of the drums. They closely follow the tune produced by the pipes and provide the changes in volume required in any tune.

The Side Drummer practices on a drum pad which is a disc of solid rubber normally housed within a frame. One of the first rudiments a drummer will learn is the roll. This requires two taps on the right stick followed by two on the left and then two on the right . The process continues, alternating sticks and gradually building up the speed. Eventually a roll will be produced although this could take some time!

The Drum Corps use Premier HTS 200 and 700 side drums with Tendura batterheads. These produce the sharpness and accuracy required for pipe band drumming.

The Corps also comprises a Base Drummer and several Tenor Drummers. The Base Drummer provides the timing for both the pipers and drummers whilst the Tenor Drums accentuate the Side Drum Beatings.

There are no qualifications needed to learn the drum only patience and a willingness to practice. There are no age restrictions either.
